Deceptive Threads

A solo theatre show fusing sophisticated multimedia, complex rhythmic interplay and secret family histories. The story of two grandfathers, one an ASIO spymaster vetting ‘unwanted’ arrivals, the other one of the earliest Middle Eastern immigrants.DECEPTIVE THREADSAugust 12 – 23Metanoia Theatre270 Sydney Rd, BrunswickTickets: Full $25, Concession $15, Student $10Bookings: http://www.trybooking.com/144932Before he joined ASIO, performer David Joseph’s maternal grandfather was a member of a singing comedy quartet made up of ex-police officers - very popular on the famous Tivoli circuit. Years later his life was full of Cold World drama, vetting immigrants and protecting White Australia from communist overthrow. On the other side his paternal grandfather was a Syrian immigrant thrust into a climate of hostile racism. He lied in order to become naturalised, had his surname changed during immigration and hawked his way from Adelaide to Toowoomba where there is now a street named after him. Multi-skilled actor and musician David Joseph (Melbourne Ska Orchestra, Green Room award winner Taxi, Phobia) uses these true family histories - with their ambiguities surrounding personal identity - to unravel the threads of our national identity, focusing on the highly contentious topics of ASIO’s increased surveillance powers and the government’s control of the ‘unwanted’ immigrant. In this highly visual show, projection is seamlessly integrated with powerful storytelling, exciting physical theatre, radically contrasting characters, humour and an evocative soundscape fused with drumming and dialogue. The creative team includes acclaimed video artist Zoe Scoglio, award winning director Karen Berger, Australia Council fellow Brian Lipson, inventive set and costume by Emily Barrie and dramatic lighting by Bronwyn Pringle.About the performer: ‘genuinely multi-talented, combining high levels of skill in performing music, physical theatre and staging’ The AustralianAbout the director: ‘an ecstatic experience… Karen Berger’s direction is perfect.’ 3MBS
